Rhinelander - The brand-new Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods just officially opened on October 4. Now, it's been officially welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce, with a ribbon cutting and donation from the Rhinelander Women's Club.

"I don't think that I anticipated how much support we would be getting as we opened, and it's just been overwhelming and we're so grateful," said Abbey Smith, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods.

She is one of the people pushing the club forward.

"We are feeling really grateful, really excited," said Smith. "The Women's Club has been a great supporter. They've been to a couple of our events, and it's really nice to be welcomed into the community, and they really, really have done that for us."

Despite being brand new, the club already has 50 children enrolled for their after-school program, which allows kids to get physical exercise, playtime, and snacks.

Organizers say the reaction from families so far has been positive.

"We have a lot of parents who have actually started picking up their kids a little bit later than they intended because the kids are so excited that when they have to leave, they get disappointed," said Smith.

The fast start was made possible, in part, by a $10,000 donation from the Rhinelander Women's Club.

"We're just trying to get it started so that we can see it grow," said Cindy Goll, president of the Rhinelander Women's Club.

Goll grew up in Rhinelander.

"I raised my children here. I was lucky to have my mother here to help me out after school."

But she knows not everyone is that lucky. She hopes the Women's Club donation will help the Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods help kids.

"We want to watch the children grow educationally, socially, and just have a good place to be after school."
