Rhinelander - On Thursday, Lights of the Northwoods hosted a membership drive picnic to thank old volunteers and recruit new ones for its annual light show at Hodag Park. This year's event is set to take place from December 1 through January 1, 2022. Event organizers say setting up the light show takes place almost a year out.

"Well in January we basically take a critique on what we did the year before. What worked and what didn't," said Donald Hoppe, the president for Lights of the Northwoods.

Event organizers say that before they set up the lights each October a vast group of organizers works together to remove the previous lights, design new displays, and work on solicitations. While they do not start setting up displays until October, they spend the entire year building them.

"I think this year we will have somewhere between 200,000 to 250,000 lights and probably 80 displays and whatever else we add on," Hoppe said. "It's all about the creative energy of the people who put it together."

Those interested in getting involved in the organization can check them out on itsĀ Facebook page.
