Northwoods - The alternate fall season is slowly coming to an end. Volleyball sectionals are taking place this week and Chequamegon took on Washburn. The Eagles battled the entire match but the Castle Guards were too much. Washburn wins this match 3-0.

A year ago, student athletes had to deal with no spring sports. The global pandemic was just beginning, cases were rampant, which led to the cancellation of all spring sports, but this year will look different.

Some spring sports like baseball and softball will begin practice next Monday but it won't be the first time these athletes have hit the field. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association allowed teams to have 15 contact days before official practices begin.

The pandemic is still going on though and it is still affecting the upcoming seasons, but with most events taking place outside, people may feel more safe attending games/matches.

"Every one of our coaches that I've talked to are jazzed about the spring getting going," Garth Gerstenberger, Tomahawk Athletic Director said. "And about being outside because the WIAA rules and regulations are different for outdoor activities than they are for indoor activities. I think our athletes are excited and really happy that we are playing outside."

Gersternberger also mentioned that social distancing and wearing a mask will still be required even though most events are outside. This is something that will be happening throughout the Great Northern Conference.

"We kind of talked as athletic directors and activity directors in our conference about some consistency within the conference," Gerstenberger said. "We do have some rules that we've talked about for athletes and for spectators so we're all trying to do the same thing."
