Three Lakes - Spending a weekend on a snowmobile is a Northwoods staple, but you don't need to shell out thousands of dollars to enjoy the activity.

In fact, the Junker Sled Weekend in Three Lakes is just the opposite.

The races started a few years ago when a few friends had an idea. Now, it's grown into an annual tradition. The few stipulations are that the sled is at least 30 years old and only worth $500 or less. But, anybody can ride regardless of experience level.

The event is now getting recognition from all across the country.

"There is a lot of local, but this is our second year we've had a group that flies up from Florida. We actually had a new first this year, we had a group from Arizona even," said Chris Dobbins, event organizer.  "My brother does the announcing here today and he made a funny joke, we're not sure how they get practice time in! It is a little odd, yeah."

Dobbins also mentioned that the event had over 240 registered sleds for 2021, setting a new record.
