Rhinelander, WI - "I think it would be extremely important considering the year that we've had."

Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods CEO Angel Zimmerman believes it could help tremendously.

"A Boys and Girls Club is going to be part of the community," said Zimmerman.

After efforts to build a club in the Northwoods started in December 2019, their campaign gained a lot of attention from the community.

And now the new club has raised over 40 thousand dollars.

They had expected to use some of that money towards a new building.

But now thanks to the School District of Rhinelander...

"They are open to helping us start the program in the school at Central Elementary," said Zimmerman. "That way it will kind of save us some fundraising."

The Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods needs to get to 150 thousand dollars to begin a summer program.

"If we can't raise that by this spring, we'll keep pushing along and hopefully we can start with the school year," said Zimmerman.

But if they were to start a summer program...what would it look like?

"One thing we can provide is a space for them to communicate with adult mentors, to meet friends, to get that social interaction," said Zimmerman.

Also, take kids on field trips to places they might not have otherwise been able to go.

Days would be 7:30 AM to 5 PM with meals and academic advice led by youth development professionals.

But the ultimate goal Zimmerman says is to have a year-round program.

"Our youth are our future," said Zimmerman. "So if we're not helping them now, what is Rhinelander going to look like in 20 years or ten years?"

Right now, Zimmerman wants people to think about the near future and donate or consider being a part of their board of directors.
