Vilas County - The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation recognizes businesses each month. For January, they've chosen FORK, Feed Our Rural Kids.
VCEDC Executive Director Kathy Schmitz says food insecurity impacts communities in the short-term and long-term. That impact is especially felt in rural areas.
"Rural counties make up 63% of all counties in the United States but 79% of the counties with the highest rates of food insecurity," says Schmitz.
FORK aims to address food insecurity and stop its lifelong-impact there.
Founder Perry Pokrandt emphasizes the issue facing families isn't personal choice -- he says it's a systemic problem that requires a systemic approach.
That approach is what Schmitz says earned FORK the distinction.
"FORK is a non-profit organization that demonstrates leadership, service, innovative programing, and collaboration and they strive to provide nutritional support to children in our area right here in Vilas County," says Schmitz. "It truly is an organization that exists to fill a need."
Schmitz says Vilas County has seen a significant growth in the non-profit sector over the years.
