Three Lakes - The Volk family has seen a lot of success lately. Kortnie Volk is currently competing for the UW-Milwaukee Track and Field team and her younger sister Kallie made it to the state cross country meet a year ago.
Now, Kallie is making a mark of her own
"You know, having both Kortnie and Kallie, has been in my mind, as a coach it's a special time," said Head Coach, Laurie Levandoski. "It's not something that every coach gets to see and their bond is amazing."
"I really wouldn't be where I am today without my sister," said Kallie Volk. "She just pushes me to be the best I can, pushes me in workouts, and gives me motivation to do what I can do."
With Kallie now running the show at Three Lakes she's stepped up without her sister by her side.
"She wasn't as sure of herself as she is this year," said Levandoski. "I think that maturity shows through. She has goals for every race. Most recently, over the last couple weeks is to go under 20 minutes."
"Knowing that there was going to be a cross country season I started to really put the mileage in and work hard and train as hard as I could because I knew there was going to be a season," said Volk.
That hard work has really paid off because if you've been lucky enough to attend any of Three Lakes cross country meets this year, you're not going to have to look hard to find Kallie. She's taken first or second in every single race.
Now, Kallie is hoping she can improve on her state performance from a year ago.
"She lost her focus a bit but I've seen great maturity this year that I don't think we'll have that same situation," said Levandoski. "But again, I think we're hoping for something better this year."
And Kallie's strategy is simple.
"Just [going to be] running my heart out," she said.
Three Lakes will have a chance to compete for a state birth as they host the Sectional race on October 24.
