THREE LAKES - Teachers at Three Lakes School District created a laundry room in an effort to increase students' self-esteem.
Three Lakes technical education teacher Mike Gorney wanted to bring the washer and dryer to his school to help students who might not have access to one at home.
"I talked to a few staff members and said, 'let's make this happen,' and we did," said Gorney.
Thanks to donations from teachers and school organizations, Gorney raised the money for the laundry machines in a matter of hours.
"I'm not a patient man, so when I get my mind set on something I have a tendency to get on it and get it done," said Gorney.
The space used to serve as a dark room for photography. However, it hadn't been used in over a decade. "It was pretty much a storage room when we cleaned everything out of there," said Gorney.
Special education teacher Nicole Lewis makes sure the room is stocked with personal essentials such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and toothbrushes. Lewis said having these items make for a better learning environment.
"Not many students, or adults for that matter are able to concentrate and learn if those basic needs aren't met," said Lewis. "I think it's one of those things that's a necessity in a school."
The room is also stocked with spare clothing in the chance that its needed.
MADISON - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds those celebrating the Fourth of July that fireworks are prohibited on all DNR lands. Prohibited areas include state parks and forests as well as state-owned public hunting and fishing properties.
