Marathon Co. restaurants celebrate Ginseng Week with unique dishes
WAUSAU - Wisconsin produces 90 to 95 percent of all the ginseng in the whole country. 

Ninety-five percent of that crop is grown in Marathon County, according to the Wisconsin DATCP.


This week Marathon County celebrated by inviting people to try different dishes made with ginseng at local restaurants as part of Ginseng Week. 

La Prima in Wausau is one of the restaurants that is taking part in Ginseng Week. 

"The entrĂ©e with the salmon is something we make [already]. The ginger and ginseng just seemed a natural fit," said La Prima owner Rollie Thomas. 

La Prima is also making pumpkin ginseng muffins and coffee cake, as well as a ginseng infused latte. 

The restaurants taking part in Ginseng Week are showing people how the root can be used in everyday food. 

"By asking the restaurants to get involved, it gives people an idea of how to use ginseng in their own cooking and just get a taste of how that flavor gets incorporated into cuisine in other parts of the world," said Visit Wausau sales and events manager Carly Hanney. 

It was such a popular idea that The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co. in Wausau already sold out of its ginseng dishes. 

"We had a Chinese herbal chicken soup," said Great Dane General Manager Ryan Pecha. "People liked it. It was an interesting thing to offer for the week."

The ginseng was given to restaurants like The Great Dane and La Prima by the Ginseng and Herb Co-Op in Marathon County. 

The week not only celebrates ginseng production, it adds a little something extra for people to enjoy in their dishes. 

"It's not like the taste is real strong, but you just feel a little extra pick me up," said Thomas.

RHINELANDER - The Pioneer Park historical complex will reopen Saturday, celebrating its 88th season.

The complex is home to seven museums outlining various aspects of Rhinelander's history.

Director Kerry Bloedorn said he's looking forward to teaching more of that history this upcoming season.

"It's quite a large complex. Lots of ground to cover, lots of great museums," said Bloedorn. "They all work together to make a great place for visitors and locals to check out."

The complex has made a few adjustments in response to COVID-19, like making hand sanitizer available, and putting up signs encouraging social distancing. 

"I'm following very closely and reading up regularly the guidelines that are set forth by the Oneida County Health Department, the WEDC, and the CDC," said Bloedorn.

Bloedorn is confident people will be comfortable distancing themselves due to the openness of the museum.

The complex opens for the season on Saturday, and is free for all.

RHINELANDER - For the past quarter century, the Hodag Farmers' market opened the Saturday before Memorial Day. This year that tradition was broken.

However, the market is set to return this weekend, with some safety guidelines in place.

Booths will be placed farther apart, and people will be encouraged to practice social distancing. People will be asked not to touch produce before purchasing it.

Vendor and community liaison Jasmyn Schmidt said the market serves as a great way to get fresh, local, food.

"You know that food came from 20 miles away, you know it was only touched by that one family that grew it, and with our precautions no one else is touching it either," said Schmidt.

Schmidt says there are a wide variety of vendors that sell much more than just food.

The market will be open Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pioneer Park in Rhinelander.
