MINOCQUA - People in Minocqua gathered at the Minocqua Brewing Company Thursday to support a local member of the U.S Ski team.
Lakeland grad Kevin Bolger had the best debut for an American at the Nordic Skiing World Cup in the spring.
He's back in town fundraising and preparing for the winter season.
The fundraiser included a dinner, a raffle and some live music.
The money raised will go directly towards travel and equipment.
Bolger wanted the chance to update his hometown on his plans for the upcoming season and thank them for all of the support.
"I am skiing for them. I grew up here. I am a Wisconsin boy at heart. Everything I do is off of these guys' shoulders," Bolger said. "They are that extra motivation for me, that driving force. So knowing I have that support, at the end of the day, it's all for them helping me out."
Bolger is expected to raise $30,000.
After Thursday's fundraiser he will be two-thirds of the way there.
People at the party said they couldn't be more proud of Bolger.
"He's a type of kid that really applies himself, so persistence turned to tenacity and a strategic overview, and he brings a warm personality to all of that. So for him to go to the World Cup is a special occasion for all of us," said Bolger's former ski coach Ken Schofield.
Bolger heads to Finland on Monday to start the season.
His first race is in mid-November.
