PRICE CO. - A DNR investigation found more than 30 deer in Price County had been killed by poachers. Conservation Warden Joe Paul says most of the poaching happened in October.
A group of about 16 people were linked to the killings. Paul says many of the poachers hunted the deer at night using rifles and shining some kind of spotlight. Some of the deer were found with their heads removed while others were left entirely.
The investigation is still active, but Paul expects charges will be filed. Under Wisconsin law poachers can be fined up to $2,000 or imprisoned for up to six months. The court can also revoke their hunting license for three years.
Paul said that none of them would have been caught if it wasn't for the public sharing their concerns.
He said there are several other poaching investigations ongoing in the area and he urges anyone who notices something to call or text the DNR tip line at 1-800-TIP-WDNR. Paul can also be reached directly at 715-416-0086 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
BOULDER JUNCTION - A 59-year-old man died Wednesday morning after a head-on crash on Highway 51 in Boulder Junction.
Two full-size pickup trucks hit each other just after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 51 and Bakken Road.
"[We] believe, from the crush of the impact, that that was a head-on, not a glancing or angled blow," said Vilas Co. Sheriff's Capt. Gerry Ritter on scene.
First responders used the "jaws of life" to take victims out of at least one truck. In addition to the man who died, two other people were taken to Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff for treatment.
