TAYLOR COUNTY - Police believe a Price County man stabbed a Taylor County man in May with a military style knife.
Derek Novak, 25, is facing three felonies including attempted reckless homicide.
According to a criminal complaint, Novak stabbed his ex-girlfriends boyfriend, Stormy Webber, because of child custody issues.
On May 10, Novak went to drop off his child with the mother, his ex-girlfriend Joanna Backstrom.
Before he got to her home in Medford, Novak spotted her car and started following her.
Eventually Backstrom pulled over on County Road Q. Webber, who was in the car with Backstrom, and Novak both got out of their cars.
Webber and Novak got into a fight. Novak then pulled out a military style knife and stabbed Webber twice.
Webber was taken to the hospital and treated for a punctured lung. Novak went to the hospital for minor injuries.
In an interview with police, Novak said he stabbed Webber "just so it was done."
Novak told police if he punched Webber the fight would have lasted 15 to 20 minutes. Novak felt like he acted in self-defense.
Novak admitted to police that he's made threats to Webber in the past. Police found text messages sent by Novak to Webber and Backstrom that day saying, "I'm on my way. Be ready for what you have coming."
Novak is in the Taylor County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond. A judge denied any bond changes Tuesday.
He's due back in court next month.
