Sawmill Brewing Company gives Merrill residents a change of pace
MERRILL - Stan Janowiak could use a break, or at least an ice-cold beer.

"I think I probably look tired, I sound tired, and I am tired," said Janowiak.

After more than a year of hard work, Janowiak opened up Sawmill Brewing Company Sunday.

People in Merrill came out to support the opening of the local business. The new brewery offers 16 Wisconsin craft beers on tap.

"This is it, you know? You can go to an everyday bar. We got a lot of those is town, but this is something a little different. There's a lot of things planned. Stan's doing a hell of a job fixing it up," said Merrill resident Marty Anderson.

Janowiak said everyone has been very supportive of his new business.

"They're so grateful. They're really are. It's just like, 'Thank you so much for doing this,'" said Janowiak. "People need a place to go and talk to each other and relax and look each other in the eye and have a conversation. So that's just been real rewarding."

Janowiak did a lot of work renovating the old DNR building on Merrill's north side.

"I think it's beautiful," said Merrill resident Warren Anderson. "I like the building. It's kind of cozy, and a lot of people showed up today. It's pretty cool."

The new business is giving people hope for better things to come in Merrill.

"This is a good deal for Merrill. You know, Merrill's on the move," said Marty Anderson. "We got the new bike trail, we got this place going, we got the riverfront going. So things are happening in Merrill for once."

Now that the brewery is open, Janowiak hopes to keep the ball rolling. He plans to have it open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Stan has also been in contact with local food trucks that will hopefully be out there Friday and Saturday nights.

"At some point, our goal is to buy our own food truck so that we can kind of offer something more consistently that we can rely on and schedule ourselves," said Janowiak.

Janowiak also hopes that he'll receive his brewer's license by mid-summer so that he can start brewing his own beer.

Sawmill Brewing Company is located at 1110 E. Street in Merrill.

ANTIGO - What starts with a tumble, ends in neatly packed, ready-to-ship bundles in the Kretz Lumber warehouse. Twenty percent of it will go across the ocean to China, with tariffs tearing into the profit.

"Twenty-five percent of our sales to China was reduced and we still have the same amount of overhead that you have to cover no matter what the price is," said Troy Brown, President of Kretz Lumber.

Though China's tariffs will be gone Friday, Brown says the foreign timber market is much different now from a year and a half ago.

RHINELANDER - A Rhinelander business is the first to be certified "autism friendly" by the Autism Society of Central Wisconsin.

The event included refreshments, speeches and even a ceremony where a certification sticker was put on the window.

Tom's Drawing Board owner Tom Barnett says it's not about his business getting certified; he's encouraging other area-businesses to get certified too.

"Autism friendly is just a place where the parent with an autistic child can go to knowing that their child is having a sensory overload, that is a judgmental free area," said Barnett.
