Rhinelander tennis wins sixth straight GNC Championship
MINOCQUA - Rhinelander boys tennis wrote another chapter in the school history books Saturday afternoon at the Great Northern Conference meet.

The Hodags took their sixth straight conference title and it wasn't close.

Rhinelander won the GNC by scoring a conference-record 40 points, just two fewer than the highest total they possibly could have scored.

The Hodags also set a record for total points in a season.

For the players that have been on the team all four years, this season was the most special of all.

"This year has probably been my favorite year because it's my senior year," Hodag tennis player Russell Benoy said. "I've been playing pretty well recently and I overcame some pretty difficult challenges, so I think overall, this year has been the most rewarding for me."

Rhinelander took championships in six of the seven flights, including all the doubles events.

Sophomore Jacob Weddle said the team has big plans for the sub-sectional round.

"We want to get five players to sectionals," Weddle said. "We want everyone to perform well and do their best. We want to keep winning conference in later years so we can keep our streak going."

The sub-sectional round will be at Wausau West High School on May 20.

RHINELANDER - It might be difficult to stay fully informed about mental illnesses and diseases.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is trying to change that through public activity.

NAMI is an organization founded in 1979 that attempts to raise awareness about mental health. The Northern Lakes chapter in Rhinelander, which serves Forest, Oneida and Vilas counties, participated in a national Mental Illness Awareness Week from Oct. 6-12.

"So what we're trying to do with Mental Illness Awareness Week is just increase the knowledge that people have about these illnesses and the fact that they're organic illnesses like any other illness you can name," said NAMI Northern Lakes Executive Director Mick Fiocchi.
