2 off-duty officers killed in separate Wisconsin incidentsSubmitted: 06/18/2019
RACINE / MILWAUKEE - Two off-duty police officers have been killed in separate incidents in southeastern Wisconsin.

Racine police say Officer John Hetland was fatally shot Monday about 9:40 p.m. when he tried to intervene in an armed robbery at Teezers bar. And Milwaukee police say Officer Kou (koo) Her died early Tuesday when he was struck by a speeding driver who ran a red light at a Milwaukee intersection. Milwaukee Chief Alfonso Morales says Her had just finished his shift in the 4th District. Police have arrested a 34-year-old man who has a history of drunken driving.

In Racine, multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for the gunman who shot Hetland after the officer tried to stop the armed robbery.

The bodies of both officers were escorted to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office in Milwaukee Tuesday.

MADISON - The Wisconsin State Bar Association along with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University law schools are preparing to honor long-time state Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson.

The bar and the law schools plan to hold a ceremony for Abrahamson in the state Capitol Tuesday evening. Speakers will include Gov. Tony Evers, former Gov. Jim Doyle and federal appellate judge and former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Diane Sykes.

MADISON - A bipartisan proposal designed to make it easier for patients to get needed prescription drugs even when insurance companies force them to try less-expensive alternatives first is headed to Gov. Tony Evers.

The Wisconsin Assembly approved the bill Tuesday on a voice vote. The Senate previously passed the measure.

KENOSHA - Police in Kenosha are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy who was dropped off at a hospital after he was shot.

Police say the shooting happened before 2 p.m. Monday at a Kenosha residence. Authorities got a call from staff at Froedtert South Hospital-Kenosha Campus after two people dropped off the boy, then left.

OSHKOSH - The badger state crowned new royalty in Oshkosh this summer. Alyssa Bohm, formerly Miss Rock River Valley, won the Miss Wisconsin pageant Saturday. 

Along with the crown and title, Bohm earned a $10,000 scholarship and will represent Wisconsin at the 2020 Miss America Competition.

Bohm hopes to use her platform to enhance opportunities for individuals with special needs.

MADISON - Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is signaling he doesn't support Republican moves to raise car registration fees in the state budget.

Evers' budget called for an additional $624 million in transportation funding, covered in part by raising the gas tax by 8 cents per gallon. The Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee scrapped his plan earlier this month and replaced with their own language that would raise title fees by $95 and car registration fees by $10.

PEMBINE - Police arrested two local boys after a fire at the historic train depot in Pembine Monday.

A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old are now in custody.

That fire stopped traffic on U.S. Highway 141 for more than an hour.

MADISON - Madison police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old woman who fell into a pond.

Police Chief Mike Koval says the victim's boyfriend called around 8:30 Saturday night to report he was unable to pull her out of the pond. Rescuers arrived within minutes and gave the woman CPR, but could not revive her.

The woman's name has not been released.
