First COVID-19 related death in Wood County Submitted: 05/22/2020
Wisconsin Rapids - The Wood County Health Department released a news release Friday confirming a person has died in Wood County due to complications surrounding COVID-19. The Wood County Health Department reported that a person in their 30's with no underlying health conditions died on May 22. This is Wood County's first COVID-19 related death.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our community members," said Susan Kunferman, Health Officer and Director for the Wood County Health Department said in the statement. "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones."

Nine people in Wood County have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and more than 13,885 have been diagnosed. There have been 485 COVID-19 related deaths in the state of Wisconsin.

Health officials said they expect the number of confirmed cases to rise in the coming weeks since the safer at home order is no longer in place. Testing and tracing efforts have been increased throughout the area and statewide to attempt to combat the spread of the disease.

"We strongly encourage community members to stay home unless activities are essential. In doing so, you're not only helping protect yourself, but also your family, friends, neighbors, and fellow community members," Kunferman said.
