DNR hosts turkey hunting training Submitted: 04/14/2019
BOULDER JUNCTION - A blanket of snow covered Northern Wisconsin last Thursday, stalling outdoor activities that people have waited months for. Hunting is no exception. The turkey season starts Wednesday. It will include some brand new hunters, and hopefully no snow.

Kyle Wuestenhagen is in his third year mentoring new turkey hunters.

"I've been hunting for years now and I like taking what I've learned from people above me that have taught me and teaching people that weren't so fortunate," said Wuestenhagen.

He was at the Boulder Junction Shooting Range this weekend alongside new and seasoned hunters for the DNR's Learn To Turkey Hunt Program.

"I wanted to learn how to turkey hunt because I've never done it before," said new hunter Easton Keloner.
Tim Ebert and others from the DNR taught the basics of hunting wild turkeys.

"We're teaching them about the equipment needed to go turkey hunting, such as firearms, calls, decoys, blinds," said Ebert.

But first timers like Brett Peterson also learned about turkey biology - how they survive, what they eat, and hunting's role in maintaining a healthy population.

"If you shoot too many they might go extinct," said Peterson.

Wuestenhagen mentored kids the last two years. This year he wanted a new challenge.

"He's the only adult this year in the program so I'm stoked to take him out in the woods for the first time," said Wuestenhagen.

Wuestenhagen said he loves the Northwoods because of the beautiful outdoors. He's excited to share it with others.

"The nature's awesome," said Wuestenhagen. "It's good to bond out there."

New turkey hunters in the DNR's program get a free turkey tag.
