- Mike Shouldice is the president of the Mecca ski club in Mercer. He's been dreaming of coordinating a pursuit ski race for the area, which hasn't been done in 10 years. This weekend his dream came true with the first ever Turtle River Pursuit. The classic leg was Saturday at Mecca Ski Trails and the skate leg was Sunday at WinMan Trails.
"We live in the Northwoods and winter lasts for a few months so people have to get outside every day," said Shouldice. "Our trail systems are incredibly beautiful up here. And our snow conditions are perfect and our grooming is meticulous."
Pursuit races feature one day of classic skiing and one day of freestyle skiing. Classic skiing takes place in the tracks, on the side of the trail, while freestyle skiing resembles skating.
Randy Ahnen and Justin Blake were on a team called "A Quarter Ton of Fun". They took second place in the team division.
"I never even place normally, so I'm pumped," said Ahnen.
With plenty of trophies and food to go around during the award ceremony, everyone was in high spirits. A lot of them will be back February 8th and 9th, 2020 when the second annual Turtle River Pursuit will happen.
