Local food pantries impacted by Drs. Foster and Smith layoffs Submitted: 01/10/2019
NORTHWOODS - The nearly 300 workers at Drs. Foster and Smith in Rhinelander will lose their jobs at different times.

Some in the next 60 days and others will get an extra month or two. But those people will need to start preparing for the very real situation of paying for the basics right now.

Food pantries in the area are worried many of those people won't be able to afford food.

Two Northwoods food pantries said more people will need more help than usual.

Even though the the Food Pantry Lakeland Center is located in Woodruff, it knows there will be a ripple affect from Rhinelander.

Director Lorna Springate said she doesn't think her pantry will have trouble providing food for at least a hundred more people.

"We get commodities through the federal government so that helps supplement the food we have to buy locally," said Springate.

Jane Motowski at the Rhinelander Area Food pantry said many people who come to the pantry don't want to be there.

She believes the people being laid off won't be happy they will need the extra help, but she will be there to make sure everyone gets the help they need.

"I figure they are here because they need food. Most people won't come to a food pantry if they don't need it," said Motowski.

Motowski said all you need to do is fill out some quick paperwork and show your I.D. to receive help from the pantry.

Springate and Motowski want to spread the message that help is available. There will be enough food for everyone.
