Rhinelander Christmas Parade needs more participants to continue Submitted: 12/02/2017
RHINELANDER - "I'm always in the Christmas Spirit," said 8-year-old Mikenzie.

The holiday spirit was alive and well during the Rhinelander Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting.

"Bringing everyone together is really kind of our goal," said Lauren Sackett, Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce Event and Program Coordinator.

All in all, the parade and tree lighting went without a hitch.

"My favorite part was seeing Santa and seeing the Charlie brown [float] cause my favorite movie is Charlie Brown," said Mikenzie.

"Everyone wants to start off with the right feeling and the mood and the emotions, so that's why this [event] is so special," said Rhinelander Chamber Director Maggie Steffen.

Despite positive reviews and a good attendance, this year's parade almost didn't happen.

"We were actually almost to the point where we were going to have to cancel the parade, earlier this week even," said Steffen.

The problem is that while plenty of people show up to watch, not many actually join in the parade.

"We need to have floats, it doesn't have to be the big elaborate float," said Steffen. "It can be decorating your car, we had a mini car, we had some people walking, and that's all it takes."

Lights of the Northwoods took part in the parade this year to help keep it going, and to spread the holiday spirit.

"The hope for the future is just to build and make things bigger and better for the city… and just making this a whole season of celebration in Rhinelander," said Vice President of the Lights of the Northwoods Shawn Will.

The parade already has loyal observers, now it just needs loyal participants.

Maggie Steffen/Rhi. Chamber Director: "Hopefully everyone will jump on board and be in it next year so we won't even have to worry about possible cancelling."

If someone is interested in joining the parade next year, they can contact the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce.
