Northwoods school district hopes to open Fab Lab Submitted: 12/03/2015
ANTIGO - The Unified School District of Antigo hopes to open a Fab Lab with the help of community businesses.

There are currently six Fab Labs in Wisconsin. Antigo could build the seventh.

The labs offer high-tech equipment to help students learn while completing different projects.

The lab in Antigo would help students interested in many different topics.

"It has some 3D printing capacity," says Interim Superintendent Dr. Don Childs. "It also has some graphics and design capacity that they'll be able to make use of—so this will be science, technology, arts and engineering and math. It won't be limited to just the techy things."

Community businesses would also be allowed to use the Fab Lab.

Students would start using the lab while they're in elementary school. As they get older, they'll be able to learn new skills.

Right now, the district is applying for grants to help build the lab. If it gets the money it needs, it hopes to open the lab during the next school year.

"It might not be right at the start of the school year," says Childs. "I would expect it to be in full flower by the fall of 2017 where things were really scheduled tightly and moving along."

The district will meet with local businesses next week to help fund the lab.
