EAGLE RIVER - A Wisconsin-themed outdoor landscape will soon accompany the new Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River.
The library reopened in December after a $2.8 million renovation and expansion project.
On Monday, volunteers started creating a rain garden and planting native flowers and grasses on the grounds.
"You have a new outside, you have the building, a new inside of the building, and we wanted to make sure that the landscaping complimented it," said Quita Sheehan of the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Department.
Sheehan is coordinating the project with the help of volunteers and donations.
The design reflects Wisconsin vegetation and is easier on the land.
"Less pesticides, less herbicides, more native plants that actually provide habitat and health to the land," Sheehan said.
Hanson's Garden Village in Rhinelander and Healy's American Tree Service pitched in with discounted or donated materials.
Horant's in Eagle River donated hundreds of plants.
"It started out with, well, here's a few plants. No, take some more. In the end, we probably got a couple of semis full of plants," said Joe Eisele, a trustee for the library.
"We're going to have an instant flowerbed, which is really neat," Sheehan said. "Usually, you have to have a little bit of patience while these things come in."
The Vilas County Master Gardeners were among the volunteers helping to create the gardens.
"It's going to be just beautiful," Eisele said. "Here, again, it's all volunteers that are doing it."
MERRILL - Pete Borchardt claims corruption in the Sheriff's Office cost him the Republican primary for Lincoln County Sheriff.
Borchardt, a Merrill police officer, lost to Sheriff's Lt. Ken Schneider by more than 400 votes in the August race. There's no Democrat on the general election ballot, so it appeared Schneider would coast into office.
But Borchardt's now running a write-in campaign. He thinks he would have won in August, if not for corruption.
"Corruption is not too strong of a word to use," Borchardt said Wednesday. "There are some things that have gone on at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office that should not go on in an organization."
