MINOCQUA - The start of colder weather can be a good time to prep your ice auger for the season.
Pointed augers can get dull after years of grinding through the ice.
You can sharpen the blades by striking a stone against the metal a few times.
But the point of the auger is what matters most for drilling.
"One little knick will slow the drill down by a lot. This point, if you drop it on the ice every time you flatten this point out. If this point isn't sharp, this blade doesn't cut," says Minocqua Hardware and Rental owner Jon Wicke.
Maintenance shops tend to get very busy as people pull out their augers for the season.
If you follow these steps, you can potentially avoid the long wait time.
