CONOVER - People in Conover and Phelps came together with an idea to connect the two communities by bike trail. Seven years later, the Great Headwaters Trail foundation can see the end of that trail.
Construction of the first 9 miles of the trail were completed this fall. The trail needs a little more than 2 miles until it's connected to Phelps.
"We knew people really had to have a vision for what the rest of this thing could be," said GHT President Jeff Currie. "Three miles out of 11 takes a lot of imagination. Now that we've got nine, I think it's not so hard to see what the final two could be like."
Currie thinks the last stretch will cost about $260,000. Some people from Conover and Phelps formed a $15,000 challenge fund to reach that goal.
All donations made to the trail before December 31 will be matched dollar for dollar.
"I can't resist saying it, but if major funders, in addition to a good appeal, give us that total, I think that we could be building that last two miles next summer," said Currie.
People can donate online or by mail.
