PLOVER - Update: 8/11 9:20pm CDT

Plover police are defending an officer who shot and wounded a man during a traffic stop, saying the man was trying to attack the officer with a knife.

A Stevens Point Journal Media report (http://spjour.nl/XdKW5c ) says Officer Andrew Hopfensperger shot 33-year-old Brett Lieberman on Friday evening.

Police initially declined to discuss the shooting in detail or say who fired at whom. On Monday, police Chief Dwayne Wierzba still declined to say where Lieberman is hospitalized, what condition he's in or whether he might face charges.

Wierzba said Monday he believes the officer used appropriate force.

He says Lieberman ran toward the officer's car waving a knife during the traffic stop. Wierzba says the attack was unprovoked, and Hopfensperger fired to stop a potentially lethal attack.
