7-on-7 passing league concludesSubmitted: 07/17/2014
Story By Dan Marz

RHINELANDER - High school football doesn't kick off for another few weeks, but you wouldn't have known it Thursday in Rhinelander.

Football players from Rhinelander, Lakeland, and Northland Pines High Schools came together for a 7-on-7 scrimmage at Rhinelander High School. It was the last of several games played over the last few weeks.

The passing league gives players a less intense way to prepare for the upcoming season.

"It's a chance to get a jump start on your passing game, is what it is," says Chris Ferge, the new head football coach for Rhinelander High School. "It's a lot of fun for the kids, they love it. This is something that you want to do for sure. It helps the kids get ready for the season."

The league also gives the Hodags a chance to get to know each other. That will be especially important with this being Coach Ferge's first season as Rhinelander's head coach.

"With a new coach coming in, it's a great opportunity for the kids to bond here, to go into practice and know what the coach's plans are," says Brian Paulson, activities director for Rhinelander High School. "Coach also gets to be able to see what our student athletes have to offer. By what he sees what they have to offer, he puts together a game plan as to what the season could look like even before we get going."

Rhinelander kicks off its season against Antigo at home on Friday, August 22nd.
