State's fight over same-sex marriage put on fast trackSubmitted: 07/11/2014

MADISON - A federal appeals court is putting Wisconsin's fight over gay marriage on a fast track and combining it with a similar case from Indiana.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that means the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals could decide the issue by the November election for governor.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled last month that the state's gay marriage ban is unconstitutional in an American Civil Liberties lawsuit. More than 500 same-sex couples got married before Crabb put her ruling on hold a week later pending an expected appeal from Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

Van Hollen filed notice of an appeal on Thursday. The appeals court Friday ordered all briefs due in the case by Aug. 4. The short briefing schedule is unusual in federal court.
