Aquatic center gets new equipment to make air cleaner, get rid of chlorine smellSubmitted: 07/11/2014

ANTIGO - Swimmers at the Clara McKenna Aquatic Center in Antigo will be able to breathe easier. That's because a big donation helped the center pay for new air handling equipment.

The Remington Foundation donated $100,000. The new air handlers will save the center more than $40,000 in utility costs. They'll also make the air healthier.

"The best thing about it is that the atmosphere at the pool is going to be better. We're going to be clearing our rooms of the chlorine smell. It's going to be healthier for our patrons, employees, and anyone who uses the facility," said Jeff Neufeld, the aquatic center director.

The new equipment will allow the center to recirculate air even if the outdoor temperature is low. That will help keep the air fresh in the winter.

The aquatic center director believes the new improvements will make the pool a better place for the community.

"This building itself is an investment for the community. It's a wonderful thing for our community to have. [This investment] will not only prolong the building itself, but also all the equipment that is housed in the two rooms," said Neufeld.

The center also got two anonymous donations that helped pay for the upgrades. The total project cost more than half a million dollars.
