RHINELANDER - Some local organizers want you to starve a mosquito by donating blood.

Demand for blood in hospitals goes up in the summer, and some hospitals struggle to get what they need.

Pioneer Park in Rhinelander will host the annual Hodag MASH Blood Drive next Tuesday to help that problem.

The park transforms into an Army MASH unit for the day to encourage people to donate.

"This is a really simple way for you to be a hero. I'm not talking about a swashbuckling, Earl Flynn to the rescue, damsel in distress hero. I'm talking about a simple, everyday hero who donates blood and saves a life," says Hodag MASH Blood Drive organizer Jerry Shidell.

The Community Blood Center sponsors the drive.

The organization supplies all blood to local hospitals.

"People hear all the time about the Buy Local campaigns. I like to think of this as a 'give local' campaign. The Community Blood Center provides all - I say one hundred percent - of the blood to the area hospitals," Shidell says.

The drive is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Tuesday.

Walk-ins are welcome, but organizers prefer appointments.
