SCHOFIELD - A man is dead after police found him inside of a vehicle underwater in Schofield Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police believe the car was in the water around 2:30 Tuesday morning.

A person saw the car in the water near Grand Avenue and Cawley Street, close to Schofield Dam, around 8 a.m. and called police.

Police say divers were at the crash trying to investigate the submerged SUV by 9:30 a.m.

Police don't know exactly how the car got in the water near the Schofield Dam, but they say there was construction in the area.

Investigators do know that Wausua Police were looking for the car earlier in the evening.

A car with a similar description had hit a traffic sign around 2 a.m., before police believe it ended up in the water.

They did find a match between car parts from the damaged sign and the car in the water.

Police did not release the name of the dead man.

They also don't know the cause of his death.
