Fishing season opener brings some successSubmitted: 05/03/2014
Story By Joe Dufek

THE NORTHWOODS - After another very long winter, the prospects for opening day of fishing weren't very good for several area lakes.

However, just the IDEA of baiting a hook and enjoying the weather outside is part of what makes the opener special.

As expected, the fishing was slow for anglers north of Rhinelander. Many of the lakes are actually still half-covered with ice. That forced everyone, including those using boats to try the rivers.

But 9-year old Garrett Tobias of Woodruff didn't seem to mind. He was fishing with his dad off the Wisconsin River in Oneida County. Garrett did catch a small musky on the Rainbow Flowage, which was released.

The action seemed to pick up in a couple of areas near Tomahawk. Many of the main lakes were open for boats. However, a few trout lakes were not.

Tomahawk native Ryan Freude was fishing with his dad. He reeled in a nice 18 inch Musky near the King Dam off the Wisconsin River.
