Lakeland hosts 16th annual T-Bird InvitationalSubmitted: 04/05/2014

MINOCQUA - Thank goodness for indoor gyms. There's still plenty of snow on the ground but track and field stars had the chance to show off today at the 16th annual T-Bird Invite.

Seven schools competed at the Lakeland Fieldhouse.

For the ladies, in the 600 meter run, Lakeland's Lauren Schilling took the top spot with a time of 1 minute 52 seconds.

In the 200 meter hurdles, Morgan Wirkus from Marathon came across first and Emily Kopecky of Phillips took second place overall.

For the 1,000 meter run Nicole Gilman from Lakeland finished first. Nicole was nearly 30 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

For the guys in the 1,000 meter, Chequamegon's Jordan Koski made a pass on the final lap and took the win just beating out Steven Studinski of Marathon.

For the 600 meter run. Keegan Bergman from Marathon was the winner with a time of 1 minute 36 seconds.

And in boys pole vault Chequamegon's Hunter Pritzl set a new personal best clearing 12 feet 6 inches. His previous high was 11 feet. Hunter took second place.

The top spot went to Marathon's Devan Gertschen. His best jump was 13 feet 6 inches.

In team scores, for the boys, Marathon finished first followed by Lakeland and Chequamegon.

And for the girls, Chequamegon was number one, Lakeland second and Marathon third.

They did that today by taking a class at Treehaven.

They learned how to tie their own flies to use for fly fishing.

"Everyone gets excited this time of year when the snow starts to melt, you start to see some open water and what better way to prepare by tying flies and start the fishing off with a good full box of flies," says class instructor Austin Noring.

TOMAHAWK - The Tomahawk Elementary School hosted its first spring carnival this year. Our Sister's House, a homeless shelter being built in Tomahawk, organized the event.

"We decided to do kind of a fun theme just to kind of get our name out there a little bit, and involve the public. So we decided to do a mini carnival," said Our Sister's House President Bernice Duchac.

The event kicks off spring break, and kids seemed to think it was a great start to their break.

RHINELANDER - An ongoing drug investigation led to the arrest of five people in Rhinelander earlier this week.

Investigators believe 40-year-old Michael Steinmetz, Jr. and 38-year-old Jaime Rickert were making meth in their Rhinelander apartment.

According to the criminal complaint, Steinmetz admitted to investigators that he made meth and dumped the waste in the toilet in his apartment.
