RHINELANDER - Everyone in Wisconsin knows about fish fry.

But there's a unique one happening in the Northwoods.

You can eat all the smelt fish you want Friday tonight in Rhinelander.

Nativity of Our Lord Parish is having a Smelt Fry at their church on Stevens Street.

They're serving 400 pounds of smelt and 25 pounds of shrimp.

The chairman says he's not sure how long it's been going on.

But he thinks they've fried fish for decades.

"I think once you've had them you gotta admit they're good and then just come back every year. Here at the Nativity Smelt Fry we also have a paddle wheel," said Smelt Fry Chairman, Paul Miller.

"So we raffle off prizes and it's a lot of fun. Good food and we have a lot of fun."

The uncooked leftovers will go the food pantry.

The cooked fish will go somewhere else.

"We've donated things to Fredrick's Place in the past or any other organization that could use the food that we have left over." Miller said.

The Smelt Fry started at 4.

But it won't end until 8 p.m.

It cost
$10 for an adult, $5 for kids and kids under six are free.

MOLE LAKE - Health workers often face different challenges on the Sokaogon Chippewa reservation in Mole Lake compared to elsewhere in the Northwoods.

"I think they're a little different. We have a (few) more challenges. Sometimes, for a lot of people, it's more crisis than prevention, or preventative services," said Tammy Queen, who works at the Sokaogon Chippewa Health Clinic. "A lot of times, they'll come in when something's bad instead of coming in before something gets really bad."

On Thursday, the tribe wanted to get people thinking about their health before problems occur.

ANTIGO - You should look out for fake checks if you live in the Antigo.

Police believe a white man, a white woman and a black man are trying to use the checks in the area.

The group is driving a white four door Mercury Cougar. There should be damage on the driver's side hood above the headlight.

Police say the checks have business names of Grainger, Viking Electric and Northwoods fire protection. They also may be written out to Renee Reefer, Renee Rewler or Joseph Norris.
