Northwoods salon owner shocked to learn building was condemned Submitted: 03/27/2014
Story By Dan McKinney

MERRILL - Merrill business owner Sandy Gipple could not believe it when she found out the salon she owned was now in a condemned building. Gipple has been cutting hair for 32 years. She hoped she could retire in her current salon, but that's not the case anymore.

"It was shocking, it took my breath away," says Sandy Gipple, Owner of Images Hair and Tanning Salon. "It was just something that I didn't think was going to happen to us, and if I would have had any inklings that something was going to be happening to my business I for sure would have been looking 60 days ago and not just 10 days ago which is what I've had to do."

The city gave Gipple just 10 days to move out. The karate building next door to the salon collapsed this winter.

That may be why the city says her building is unsafe, but Gipple says the city hasn't even given her an official explanation.

She had been renting the salon building. Fortunately she has a place to move downtown, but she had to buy the new place.

"Before I had just the responsibility of taking care of my girls and making sure things were up and running in the current salon that I was renting," says Gipple. "Now it's going to be all the upkeep is going to be on me, electrical, plumbing, windows, siding, all that now, taxes, that's all going to be my responsibility now."

Gipple will move her salon just up the street on Main in downtown Merrill. She's only going to lose two days of business.

Bundle Up program aims to keep families warm; how you can helpSubmitted: 11/27/2014

RHINELANDER - You can help families stay warm this winter by donating your extra winter clothing to the Big Bundle Up Campaign. Tourism groups across Wisconsin are looking for mittens, scarves, coats, and other winter gear.

"Those would be really helpful for a lot of people in the area," Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dana DeMet said. "And I think the biggest challenge in the Northwoods is that it's just not as visible, so it's a little harder sometimes to garner that support if you are not faced with it on the streets every day."
