Hodags fall one game short of stateSubmitted: 03/08/2014
Story By Marisa Silvas

MARSHFIELD - The last time the Hodags boys basketball team was in the sectional final was 2001.

Current head coach Derek Lemmens was a player on that team - which earned a trip to state.

This afternoon, Rhinelander faced state-ranked Rice Lake in Marshfield.

Rhinelander junior Gabbe Millot sang the National Anthum before the game.

Hodags and their fans were fired up looking to make history.

1st quarter off the miss Kent Matthews with the rebound and the putback. Hodags up by seven. Matthews led Rhinelander with 17 points.

2nd quarter Rhinelander down one until Devin Oleinik nails a three from the corner as the Hodags regain the lead.

But from there Rice Lake outscored Rhinelander 13-8 to end the half, including Trapper Ward scoring in the paint to take the lead. Rhinelander down three at the break.

3rd quarter Warriors work it inside to 6'10" Henry Ellenson who gets the dunk.

Ellenson scored a game-high 34 points. Rhinelander could not find an answer. Hodags fall 72-49. A disappointing end to a magical season.

EAGLE RIVER - Some local students could win state and national awards by taking a math exam.

Students at Northland Pines High School will take the Trig-Star Exam in March.

The exam tests students on trigonometry they've learned in high school.

Students need to be able to apply that knowledge to real life situations as if they're a land surveyor.

"Land surveying in itself is a basis for a lot of things in our country," says Vilas County Land Information/Mapping Department GIS Technician Tony Jones. "It's a chance to work outside, it's a chance to work with your hands, it's also a professional level position. You get to work with mathematics, and architecture, and history, and law."
