Area wrestlers ready to compete at stateSubmitted: 02/25/2014

- 560 of the best high school wrestlers are headed to Madison this week.

The state Individual championship tournament gets underway Thursday.

Several Northwoods wrestlers will be competing in all three divisions.

Some of the sectional champs heading down include Rhinelander's Connor Johnson. The Division One 195 pounder is ranked #2 in the state. He finished 5th last year. He says he feels alot better heading down this time around.

"Time in the weight room, I was 220 pounds in football," Johnson explains. "I had to cut to make 195 (pounds) this year. Nice to have more throwing around muscle. Nice to represent my town."


Crandon has two wrestlers state-bound. Morgan Krueger and Grant Murray finished second in their weight classes in Division Three.

Other D-1 area wrestlers include Fritz Schierl of SPASH earned his first trip at 138 pounds. He's excited to take part in his first tourney

The Merrill Bluejays will be sending seven wrestlers to state. That includes 170-pounder David Pophal, 220-pound defending state champ Tyler Schmidt, and Ben Hintze at 182. All section champs.

They're also competing in next week's team wrestling championships.
