Newswatch 12 POW nominees Feb 10
- The Olympics is not the only place to find top-notch performances. Several high
school athletes are also putting in some memorable games.

Here are the nominees for the Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

NOMINEE 1

Rhinelander senior David Pokrandt had the chance to go from manager to varisty
basktball player for one night. Dave played the final minute against Tomahawk
and hit the three pointer. A great moment for the young man batteling cognitive
disability and A-D-H-D.


NOMINEE 2

Antigo boys' hockey team earned a huge road victory against Northland Pines.
Matt Wolter had a hat-trick - or scored three goals against the Eagles.

NOMINEE 3

In nordic skiing, Lakeland's Erin Bolger was the state champion in the pursuit
race. She was more than one minute faster than all of the other competitors in
Cable this weekend.

NOMINEE 4

Chequamegon boys' basketball star Shane Wakefield scored a game-high 36 points
against Rib Lake. He also had 9 steals, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in the victory.

To vote on any of the nominees, go to the sports poll at wjfw.com. Voting ends
at 3pm on Friday. The winner earns a plaque for the achievement.

Dan Baratka of the Phillips boys' basketball team was last week's winner.

RHINELANDER - Chilly fall weather might make you want to curl up next to your space heater or fire place, but those heating sources bring some fire risks with them.

You should never leave space heaters unattended.

That includes when you sleep.

Pets or small children can tip over the unit and start a fire.

MADISON - Rhinelander's former police chief just finished the FBI's "crown jewel" of training.  Mike Steffes -- who is now the Deputy Administrator of the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Law Enforcement Services --completed the three-week "National Executive Institute" in September.

The academy is designed for executives that lead more than 500 sworn officers and serve populations of 250,000 or more.

RHINELANDER - Lawyers expect to call "a number" of expert witnesses in the Oneida County homicide case against Ellen Tran.

Finding and vetting those experts could take months, lawyers told a judge on Tuesday in court.

Tran is charged with causing the death of her 20-month-old stepson, Avery Edwards, at a Rhinelander home in April.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys will spend until February to identify those witnesses.

After that, the case could go to trial.

RHINELANDER - The Tri County Council will hold a candlelight vigil on Friday to honor those who lost their lives to domestic violence in Wisconsin last year.

The statewide homicide report says 73 people were killed as a result of domestic violence in 2016.

MADISON - The leaders of Gov. Scott Walker's job creation agency met behind closed doors again to discuss contract negotiations with Foxconn Technology Group but didn't take any action.

The electronics giant wants to build a flat-screen manufacturing campus in Mount Pleasant. Walker signed a $3 billion incentives package for the company last month.
