New fire station nears completionSubmitted: 01/23/2014
Story By Lauren Stephenson

MERRILL - Merrill firefighters will soon call a new facility home.

Construction on the new fire station is almost complete.

The building will be ready January 31st.

The fire department will move in the following week.

The department is looking forward to the move.

The old fire station was built in 1915.

It had plumbing and electrical issues.

"To expect the people who take care of our lives and property, these are our
firemen and paramedics, to have them live in a less than adequate situation, it
was asking a bit much of them," said City of Merrill Administrator Dave Johnson.

The new, state-of-the-art fire station cost $3.5 million.

It will also house new equipment.

"A local foundation donated 2 new fire trucks because they thought that we
should have nice, shiny, new equipment up to date to go into our nice, shiny,
new fire station," said Johnson.

The fire department will host a dedication ceremony on February 6th.

RHINELANDER - Inside Tricia's Treasures in downtown Rhinelander, Jennifer Sturzl takes a lot of pride in a carefully crafted latte. But out the back door, things aren't as pretty.

Across the alley sits the run-down former Kabel Auto building. Its brick walls are heavily aged, and many windows are boarded up.

"First of all, it's an eyesore," Sturzl said Thursday morning.

But soon, that so-called eyesore across from McDonald's will come down, and it could likely turn into a parking lot on South Stevens Street.

THREE LAKES - A guitarist from Japan, a mini film fest, and a comedy improv group will all make a stop in Three Lakes soon.

Three Lakes Center for the Arts' opening act is Friday.

Hiroya Tsukamoto is an acoustic guitarist from Japan.

Live events coordinator Gay Scheffen says she has a lot of fun booking acts, like Hiroya.

She works throughout the winter to make sure there are weekly events throughout the entire summer.

The entertainment includes anything from live comedy to movies.

"This summer we have 20 live events. I book some old acts again that people like to see. Every morning when I turn on my computer, there are five to ten agents or bands emailing me saying they've heard about the theater and they want to appear," said Scheffen.

Hiroya tells stories and reads poems while playing acoustic guitar.

He is doing a series of concerts in the Midwest.

This is the second time Hiroya will play at Three Lakes Center for the Arts.

He says he loves the theater for its acoustics.

"I love the room. It's a perfect size and it's great for my music. I play slow performance, and the sound is amazing!" said Tsukamoto.

Hiroya will play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
