Drug dealers may be targeting rural areasSubmitted: 01/14/2014

SHAWANO COUNTY - Drug dealers may be targeting rural areas.

Authorities in and around Shawano County say they're seeing a rise in drug-related activity.

That's because drug suppliers may think of rural areas as harder to police.

Officers are trying to combat that perception with aggressive drug enforcement and education.

Shawano County sheriff's Capt. Tom Tuma says intelligence out of the prison system suggests a change in drug-dealing strategy.

He says dealers seem to believe that smaller communities have fewer police resources.

He says authorities are fighting back by combining resources.

Counties are teaming up to pool resources, and federal agents have also been active in trying to shut down heroin rings that extend to Milwaukee and Chicago.

Authorities say part of the solution is to educate users, not simply arrest them.
