Preparing Roads for WinterSubmitted: 10/17/2013
Story By Melissa Constanzer

ACROSS THE NORTHWOODS - It might be hard to believe that snow could be falling in a matter of weeks, but luckily our roads will be ready.

Winter brings headaches like these, but the Oneida County Highway Department says it is ready for a normal winter with sand and salt amounts.

"We actually upped that total from last year because as you know, last year was an extremely long winter. It stretched out into the third week off April. We did run short on sand and had to produce more. So what we did this year is we produced more in the beginning," says Freeman Bennett, Oneida County Highway Commissioner.

The Highway Department continues to mix and distribute sand and salt to its stations. They are also busy filling pot holes and raising shoulders.

Oneida County is ready financially for winter. This is something Lincoln County has struggled with in the past. They ran out of money last spring. Lincoln County says they are ready for this year after cutting some summer roadwork projects.
