RHINELANDER - Paws hit the pavement today in Rhinelander.

It was all for a good cause.

This was the second annual Downtown Pet Stroll.

Pet owners and their furry friends met downtown to walk a mile in Rhinelander.

More exotic owners dressed their dog up.

Oneida humane society director says this helps support the animals.

It's also a great way to get exercise.

"A lot of shelters and humane societies have walks. It's kind of a well known fundraiser for humane societies," said Oneida County Humane Society director, Bria Swartout.

"It just brings people out. Getting along with bringing their pet out. Able to walk and get exercise for both you and your pet."

They're not sure how much money they raised today.

But officials have high hopes they raised as much as last year.

"We're hoping to reach last year's goal. It was about $2,500 last year. So we're hoping to exceed that." Swartout said.

If you didn't walk today, you can always go on their website and donate.

HURLEY - Iron County officials say other developers with better qualifications than Gogebic Taconite are interested in mining ore in the Penokee Hills.

County Board members met last week with representatives from La Pointe Iron Co., which owns much of the land in northern Wisconsin that Gogebic Taconite tried to develop before pulling out in February.

One county board member says Gogebic Taconite's performance may make it harder for another developer to gain the public's trust.

He says county residents will likely remain divided on the mine because of environmental concerns.

But if state and federal regulators can guarantee the environment won't suffer, he says the mine might be worth pursuing because it could bring jobs to an area that desperately needs them.
