Three Lakes volleyball loses point, beats ElchoSubmitted: 09/12/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

ELCHO - High school volleyball Thursday night, Three Lakes was in Elcho.

Elcho is in the far court. You have to check this out. This point lasted 50 seconds. Imagine going in constant motion like these ladies are for that long.

This is the last 30 seconds of the play it's so long. Players are diving to keep it alive.

Imagine trying to call the action on this play, or writing it down. You would need a whole notebook for the play.

Finally Three Lakes can't return it. Elcho gets the point.

But Three Lakes would get the match. They won 3-zip.

EAGLE RIVER - Take salvaged metal and wood, hand it to one Eagle River artist, and watch his imagination come to life.

It's all thanks to a man dedicated to combining nature with what's manmade.

Ken Schels isn't your typical carpenter or welder.

He welds, chops, and carves fantasy into reality for his clients at his KMS workshop.

The Northwoods native can tell you where every piece of wood in his shop comes from.

He'll also tell you about all of the metal pieces he has collected over the years for his projects.
Gears, chains, axes, and bolts are just some of the pieces you can spot in his art.

"One guys says, 'That's a Ford wrench, that's worth $30!' Well I'm like, you stand there and watch me weld it in," said Schels.

Ken admits his work is out-of-the-box and a little strange at times, but he does it so people can have something to pass on through history.

THREE LAKES - Students in Three Lakes now have a new option for winter recess.

This year the Three Lakes Park District donated an ice skating rink to the Three Lakes Elementary School.

The Three Lakes Fire Department and other members of the community joined in to put the rink together.

The ice skating rink was originally at Burnside Park. Moving the rink to the school made it smaller and more accessible for students.

"It's a really good feeling because, it gives the kids something to do," said Three Lakes Fire Chief Dave Kirby.

"You can only [go on the swings a certain amount of times] in the winter.

[They get to] skate and do something they like, it's a good feeling."
