Northwoods Spotlight - Archery season opens SaturdaySubmitted: 09/11/2013

RHINELANDER - Fall is right around the corner. That means hunting season is coming up. In fact, it gets underway this weekend.

For Dan Grunst, archery has been a lifelong passion.

He started making small products out of his parents home. Now, Grunst Archery in Rhinelander has been in business for almost 40 years.

"I've seen a lot of kids when they started," Grunst explains. "Now they're bringing in their grand kids. So it's become a multi-generational sport."


Grunst manufactures both strings and bows. And carries hundreds of other items.

"It requires a little education," Grunst adds. "Then a little refitting. We try to bring out the best in everybody."

The early archery season starts Saturday. Hunters are making sure they have everything they need to get a deer.

"You walk in, bought what I needed, he takes good care of you," Harshaw's David Macak says. "I wouldn't go anywhere else."

Currently, only physically disabled hunters or those over 65 may use a crossbow. But on September 17th, the Wisconsin Senate will decide if they will expand crossbow use to hunters of all ages.

Whatever the rules, it's all about the thrill of the hunt.
