Inaugural W.I.L.D. Hodag Mini-Triathlon nears in RhinelanderSubmitted: 08/16/2013

RHINELANDER - Going the distance can be overwhelming for a triathlete.

And sometimes, races take place too far away.

But one triathlon brings its first-ever annual race closer to home.

Holiday Acres will host the first W.I.L.D. Hodag Mini-Triathlon next Saturday in Rhinelander.

Athletes can either compete individually or team up for the 300-yard swim, 10k offroad bike, and 5k run.

Sometimes, organizing a first-year event can be a challenge.

But the triathlon looks like it will be a success.

"Things have been going pretty well so far. At two weeks out, we had about 30 registrants, and we thought for a first-time annual event, that was pretty good going into it. We knew most of the signups would take place in the last one to two weeks. We felt really good coming into this week and we're even more excited for the triathlon coming up a week from this Saturday," says organizer Tim Thorsen.

The triathlon will benefit W.I.L.D., a ministry that serves to spread the Christian message in Africa as well as here in the Northwoods.

ACROSS WISCONSIN - Nearly one in three adults in Wisconsin is considered obese according to a report by the Trust for America's Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. According to the data and trend, the state isn't slimming, but the increase has almost leveled off over the last few year.

Wisconsin ranks 22nd in the U.S. and still lags behind states like West Virginia and Mississippi. Thirty-five percent of people there are considered obese.

Specialists like Eric Filipiak at Riverside Athletic Club in Merrill say a healthy transition starts by finding the right environment.

MARATHON COUNTY - UPDATE 9/21/14 3:56 p.m.:

We now know the name of the man hurt in a motorcycle accident in Marathon County on Saturday.

51-year-old Kevin Gray from Mosinee was taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital with life threatening injuries. The Wisconsin State Patrol says Gray was driving east on County Road WW when he tried to avoid hitting a stopped car in front of him. The motorcycle crashed leaving the rider and the motorcycle in oncoming traffic.
