Northwoods library hosts worm raceSubmitted: 07/30/2013

RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander District Library helps kids dig into reading, quite literally.

It hosted the annual Worm Race Tuesday.

62 teams of two did everything they could to get their worms to the finish line first.

The race wasn't the only fun part of the day.

"It was fun to name him," says race winner Caleb Zastrow.

Zastrow named his worm Bob.

This was his four-year-old sister Lexie's first time racing a worm.

"It was fun playing with my brother, and when it was starting, I loved the part with the race," Lexie Zastrow added.

The event is so popular that there's a waiting list for teams to race.

That makes library staffers proud.

"Having the books and computers are nice but if you do special programming they tend to stick around and take out some books, and we really try to promote reading during the summer when sometimes it lacks," says Rhinelander District Library Associate Director Tom Hurlburt.

Kids went home with gift certificates for pizza, some gummy worms, and other prizes.

The winning kids even got trophies.

Let's hope the winning worms avoid the bait box.

PRICE COUNTY - A truck versus train crash killed a woman late Saturday morning.

According to the Price County Sheriff's Office, it happened at the intersection of County Road D and the Canadian National Railroad tracks in the Township of Knox.

Police think a 76-year-old man was driving the truck with a 76-year-old woman in the passenger seat, and the truck and the train collided.

Several different agencies responded, including Canadian National Railroad investigators.

Crews took the man to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, and they took the woman to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau where she later died.

Police are still investigating and will not yet release the names.

STEVENS POINT - David Appel doesn't say too much these days.  Instead, he lets his artwork speak for him.

"Oh yeah, he likes to show them off," David's son Dan said.

The recently turned 82-year-old spends his days in the Portage County Skilled Nursing Facility. His family often spends their weekly visit admiring the oil paintings he once crafted.

"I wouldn't call it a shock, but I didn't know he had that artistic skill," Dan Appel said.

BUTTERNUT - When sheep farmers Paul and Judy Canik checked on their pasture on the morning of May 31, their curiosity soon turned to shock.

Wolves had killed 17 of the couple's most valuable sheep. They had slaughtered 17 bighorn ewes.

"It was terrible to see them laying there dead like that, torn apart and stuff," Paul said. "They killed them all and never ate [anything]. Just killed them for the fun of it."

GREEN BAY - Prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her mother and injuring a third person in the Green Bay area.

Jacob Cayer of Ashwaubenon was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide. WLUK-TV reports Cayer also is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, burglary, and bail jumping.

EAGLE RIVER - The Northland Pines fishing team is about as basic as it gets: just two kids, bait, and their gear.

"I didn't expect to go anywhere," said Northland Pines junior Mike John.

But in its first year the team is headed to nationals after taking second at the BASS Wisconsin High School Fishing Tournament. It was the first tournament the two have competed in together.
