Snowmobiles burn grass in Three LakesSubmitted: 07/27/2013
Story By Joe Dufek

THREE LAKES - Some folks might feel like the recent temps is more of a sign of late fall.

Snowmobiles were racing around Three Lakes today.

It's the 4th annual Vintage Thunder Grass Drags. About 110 drivers were competing in 24 different classes.

The event is also a fund-raiser for the Three Lakes Trail system. Organizers hoped to raise about $1500.

Some sleds are going 70 miles per hour. Kids are racing too - just quite as fast.

5-year old Tommy Burr of Eagle River loves racing on the grass.

"Because you can win trophies. You can go fast."

Tommy did win a trophy. He was the Mini 120 stock feature winner.

His father Steve adds, "For us it's a family event. With Tommy running now, myself, my sister races - we really enjoy it."

"It is a fund raiser for Three Lakes Trails," race coordinator Mark Kirby explains. "It helps with the cost of maintaining the trails. Fuel, new equipment, whatever it takes."

Also Rhinelander's Leah Tanner won the big race - the Northwoods Cup Challenge.
