Snowmobiles burn grass in Three LakesSubmitted: 07/27/2013

THREE LAKES - Some folks might feel like the recent temps is more of a sign of late fall.

Snowmobiles were racing around Three Lakes today.

It's the 4th annual Vintage Thunder Grass Drags. About 110 drivers were competing in 24 different classes.

The event is also a fund-raiser for the Three Lakes Trail system. Organizers hoped to raise about $1500.

Some sleds are going 70 miles per hour. Kids are racing too - just quite as fast.


5-year old Tommy Burr of Eagle River loves racing on the grass.

"Because you can win trophies. You can go fast."

Tommy did win a trophy. He was the Mini 120 stock feature winner.

His father Steve adds, "For us it's a family event. With Tommy running now, myself, my sister races - we really enjoy it."

"It is a fund raiser for Three Lakes Trails," race coordinator Mark Kirby explains. "It helps with the cost of maintaining the trails. Fuel, new equipment, whatever it takes."

Also Rhinelander's Leah Tanner won the big race - the Northwoods Cup Challenge.

PLOVER - Police hope to find a Plover woman who disappeared last week.

Krista M. Sypher, 44, was last seen March 13.  She lives on Hoffman Drive in the Village of Plover.  She did not take her car.

Sypher's cellphone has been off since she disappeared, and she has not contacted family or friends.

LONDON - The White House says President Donald Trump has been briefed on a gun-and-knife incident at Britain's Parliament in London.

Trump himself said during a brief appearance Wednesday before reporters at the White House that he was just getting the news. He called it "big news."

MADISON - Former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold launched a new nonprofit political advocacy group Wednesday focused on voters' rights, campaign finance reform, protecting the independence of the U.S. Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College.

Feingold told The Associated Press that the goal of his group, called LegitAction, is to connect local activists with the larger movement and not be distracted by more trivial, daily controversies surrounding President Donald Trump.
