Wisconsin lacks list of unsolved murdersSubmitted: 07/22/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - Sometimes murders go unsolved, but Wisconsin has no comprehensive list of those cases.

There have been at least 282 killings with no one held accountable between 2003 and 2012.

That number rises to nearly 400 when you add in prominent cases that date back to 1953.

It's possible the number could be much higher.

Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department recently served as president of the Wisconsin Association of Homicide Investigators.

He says having a database of unsolved murders could generate tips and leads.

Institutional barriers have stood in the way of establishing a public listing of cold cases.

The progress of an investigation, and how broadly the case information is shared, depends on which agency is handling the case.
