Story By Joe Dufek

MERRILL - The basketball season lasted just a dozen games for Merrill's Renee Sladek. The impact of her knee injury didn't stop her receiving accolades. She was named the Wisconsin Valley Conference Co-Player of the year in March.

Now she has verbally committed to playing basketball for Division One Northern Illinois University.

Kathi Bennett, the daughter of legendary Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett is the head coach at NIU.

Renee told Newswatch 12 on the phone Monday afternoon she like Kathi's coaching style and felt welcomed at NIU.

In 54 career games, Sladek has scored 712 career points, averaging 13.2 per game.

Renee also considered Toledo, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State - all Division One programs.
