Story By Kailey Burton

THREE LAKES - Imagine racing by canoe, for 14 hours, OVERNIGHT... THAT is the Hodag Challenge. It's an annual kick-off to summer for camp counselors and staff at HoneyRock.

Racers cover 54 miles, nonstop. They start at HoneyRock, about 10 miles north of Three Lakes, and follow the Rainbow flowage and Wisconsin River into Boom Lake. That takes most canoers 12 to 14 hours.

The racers take off between 6:00 and 7:00 pm tonight. The first racers will start pulling into Boom Lake between 7:00 and 8:00 tomorrow morning.

Newswatch 12's Shardaa Gray will be there to cover the race.

It happened in July on Shawano Lake in Shawano County, and on Minocqua Lake a few years ago.

"Accidents can happen in seconds, and there's total chaos and emergency," Bohn says while touring Minocqua Lake on his fishing boat.
