Woman fends off black bear with unloaded shotgun in Marinette Co.Submitted: 05/16/2013
Story By WJFW News Team

SILVER CLIFF, WI - A woman fought off a black bear that was attacking her husband and dog Wednesday. It happened in the tiny Marinette County town of Silver Cliff.

The sheriff's department says a deputy arrived at a cabin to find a young black bear circling the home. The deputy shot the bear and killed it.

He then found an injured husband and wife inside.

The wife said the bear initially went after their dog. Then, when the husband tried to bring the dog inside, she says the bear caught up to him from behind, took him to the ground and clawed and bit his back.

The man made it inside the cabin, where the wife used an unloaded shotgun to beat the bear.

Eventually, they got the bear to go back outside the cabin, but that's when it started circling. The husband was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The DNR took the bear to Madison for rabies testing.
